What is Middle Grade?

*
I tried to answer the question, What is Middle Grade Fiction? over at the Literary Lab.

Link over and check it out.

really. do it.

seriously - go for it.

I sometimes get weary of people saying, "I like your book, but it doesn't seem right for the YA market."

Well, guess what?? It's not for the YA market. It's MG. There is a difference.

ok, that bit of sassy commentary was fun.

thanks for putting up with me, folks - I'm off the soapbox now.

I'm unfamiliar w/ the distinctions of MG vs YA so will peek over at that link, thanks!

It's funny, even before I got into writing I would have thought that the difference between Middle Grade and Young Adult is pretty clear. My mind always linked it to middle school versus high school (even though that's not totally accurate, it provided a good starting distinction).

Whoa, Tess just got snarky! Yes, it was sassy, but I prefer the term snark since it covers so much territory . . . just like the distinction between MG and YA (ya like how I worked that one in). Great post over at The Literary Lab.

It's funny how many different places there are in the writing world. :D Do we get extra points if we know the difference between MG and YA? :P

You guys are the best -- thanks for taking the snark in the spirit it was intended :D

I used to think that all the books I was reading were considered YA, then I took a look around the library and it hit my like a ton of bricks. There is a whole section dedicated for the genre only. I love MG and that is what I write. I hate it when people say "What is MG, I just thought they were all kids books." No people no! Thanks for this post Tess, I often get confused as to what is to long for MG.

This whole debate is crazy to me! --I had a writer friend who had a book where the main character was 13...they wanted to make her stuff YA JUST because of that age thing...It did NOT belong there!

I agree with you! "Middle grade" fiction is simply the best and its writers are the most talented and inspired. :)
