Why Do You Write?

A friend asked me this recently and I've been mulling on my thoughts....

I write because it is an expression of myself
I write because I can't sing or paint or sew or play sports...it's really all can do
I write with a secret hope someone will read and know more about who I really am
I write because it feels good

What about you?  Why do you write (or do whatever your passion may be)?

I write because I have to many ideas and if I don't get them down I'll go crazy.

I write because it makes me happy.

I write because it takes me to other places, just like reading.

I write because it is the one piece of myself that belongs only to me (and eventually to others, if I am lucky) but while I am writing, it's only mine.

I need that.

I write because my mom inspires me,
I write because I hope I can do the same to others,
and I write because it teaches me more about myself :)

Writing brings out what is hidden in me. Without meaning to, there's always a bit of MY story wrapped in the one I'm writing.

P.S. LOVE your cover!

I write for many of the reasons already stated. For me, writing is the one thing I feel like I have very little control over - the words seem to present themselves and we simply respond to their presence. So much of our lives can be dominated by expectations or perceptions - how refreshing to engage in one thing which at least feels to be free from all of that!!

I write because I can and because I can escape the drudgery of the world.

I am reading each of these thinking "yes, me too! that too!"
ahhh....what I love about other writers is how much we have in common.

First of all, it's NOT all you can do. You are EXTREMELY talented in MANY other areas of your life. You also are a writer. It's a gift.

I don't consider myself much of a writer, but I do like to write, as well. Because I am a storyteller. So, if I can't get people to listen to me talk, maybe they will read the story if I write it down.

Miss P: I'll read your story. Write it! write it! and, thanks.

I write because I love to daydream and have imaginary conversations.

I write because it allows me to explore levels of my subconscious that I might not get to otherwise.

I write books for teenagers because it allows me to re-explore that time in my own life. What other time is so emotionally fraught and so exciting with discovery?

It probably all boils down to love. I love to write and make believe, so novels are the natural result. :)

What a good question. I write because I have to. I practically itch if I don't write some way, some how. Lucky for me, or coincidentally, I love to make up stories.

I loved how you said you write so people will know you. I think that's very telling, and probably (deep down) my reason too.

I write because I'm happier when I do. It's hard to imagine my life without it.

I have to echo your third reason.

I also write because the reading experience is so wonderful that writing seems a way to heighten it: I love to read books, so I want to MAKE books.

Really, I write because. It's just who I am.

I write because I have voices in my head. I write to let them out. I write because it is my gift and I simply must use it. I also make music for the same reasons.
So happy you have this gift, too.

I write because I love to read, and fiction often presents us with the kind of heroes we long for. I love being able to create those heroes, even though I rake them across the coals of evil.
