Tell Me the Truth

Ever have those moments when you're plugging along, feeling like you are holding it together and then BAM something happens that makes you ask:

Seriously? Does everyone do that?

A few days ago, my oldest (she's a senior) had her pals over. She asked what was for dinner and I told her I wasn't cooking that night. The conversation led to me learning her friends have mothers who cook a new meal every single night!

I cook four times a week, max. The other nights are left overs or going out or what we affectionately call "fix-your-owni" (it rhymes with macaroni).

Now, know this: my kiddos are a bit older. They CAN cook and are pretty good at it.

But the whole thing left me wondering....

How many times a week do you cook for your families?

Average 3-4. Depends on the week and who's eating. Those other girls' mothers probably aren't writing and selling books, just sayin'. We're all doing different things.

ROFL, I have no kids, but you can bet that after a hard day's work, I'm not looking forward to cooking every night. We have a lot of leftovers, and we try to eat them. If I had to take care of a whole freshly cooked meal, and dishes, AND make sure my kids have done their homework, there wouldn't be much time to work on my own stuff.

Sometimes meals are the easiest thing to sacrifice.

Mary: oh that makes me feel so much better.

Tere: AMEN Sister!!!

Um. We cook when the brother and his family come to town. Which is like once a month maybe.

Otherwise it's Lean Cuisines and bread with peanut butter.

So don't feel bad at all.

Cook? Nah. Now, I don't have kids, and my husband works a lot of evenings, so I often just fend for myself with whatever. But growing up, my mom cooked Fridays and Sundays for sure and I think just threw stuff together the other nights. We didn't eat a ton of junk, but they weren't full meals but for the twice a week.

That said, my sister-in-law, who is SUPERWOMAN, cooks every day, but I just think that's weird. And maybe even TOO healthy. ;-)

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I do cook for my family almost every night. During football season (my hubs is a coach) we eat McDonalds on Friday night (really healthy, right?) just to give me sanity before we head to the game. But all the other nights of the week, I mostly cook. My husband eats most of the leftovers for lunch the next day, so that's not really an option. :( I really enjoy cooking, though, so I don't mind.

I try to get out of cooking whenever possible. Leftovers are almost a staple in my home.

I think four nights is plenty generous. There almost have to be leftovers to take care of at least two more nights, and the 7th night can be DIY, frozen pizza, carry-out, fast food, a nice restaurant meal, or whatever. When my kids were at home, I seldom cooked brand new meals more than 3-4 times per week. I've known women who cook a month's worth of food in one marathon weekend and freeze it.

Stehphanie: ha! you're my kind of gal :)

Joanne: Yes, TOO healthy. Gotta leave room for pizza night.

AL: Don't be embarrassed! I think it's great, esp if your kiddos are little. And, I'll still be your friend ;)

Lisa: that's exactly what I'm saying here...aren't leftovers an ACTUAL staple?

Marcia: yes, I've heard of that cooking marathon/freeze it thing too. It's not a bad idea, I guess and probably saves them a lot of time in the end. My thing is "why do I have to cook and freeze it if Stoffers already did?" haha..okay, that actually made me laugh out loud.

I'm with you--four max: Sunday through Wednesday (and some of those dinners hopefully include leftovers). Thursday is do-it-yourself, and Friday and Saturday are take-out or eat out. I tell DH that being born female didn't magically make me a cook.

My wife cooks maybe 3 to 4 times a week, and I'm perfectly fine with that. She runs a travel agency out of our home, so some sacrifices have to be made, but one of them isn't that I would cook more. Nobody's that desperate! :)

Tess, you are GOOD! Four times a week is awesome! I cook MAYBE one or two times a week, the rest my husband does because he absolutely LOVES to cook (that's also his profession). So I guess I kind of lucked out in that regard! :)

Lately, none, hah. Maybe once on a good week, but when life is normal, about twice a week.

Zero. Absolutely zero. I expect the man to cook for me. Since mine only sometimes does, we just eat out. And I've had cold cereal as a meal. Hey I was raised a NYer, fuhggedabout it.

2-4 times. That said, one time is when I make a large pot of stew on a Sunday that can last the whole week....if my teenagers don't hoover it up in a day or two.

I cook 6 nights a week, and we usually just get pizza or go out on Saturday. I've assigned each kid a night to cook, but at this point I'm still in the kitchen with them because they're still learning. Plus, with our busy schedule, most times I end up doing the cooking even on their nights because they've got something else going on or I just forget to get them in there with me. I really need to work on that.

Thank you for asking! I've always wondered if we were freaks or not...

My husband or I cook 6 nights a week. We tend to get pizza on Fridays. Leftovers are hub's usually lunch the next day.
