How NOT to get sued

Okay, here's the skinny...

when I first composed my trailer for With A Name Like Love, I was pretty much an idiot.

you know
, fresh and ignorant and thinking it didn't matter if I used pictures off of Flikr.com or other photo sites without paying royalties or securing permissions.

After all, it was just me on my little computer and I didn't even have an agent for the book, much less a publisher.

Not a good idea.

Don't worry...I didn't get in any trouble,

but I did get thinking
maybe I should change it to public domain stuff.

So...I spent the entire day searching public photo sites and found that the best one by a huge margin is morguefile.com

They require you to register, but they have a much larger selection of public domain photos to choose from.

Free of cost.
... free of worry .... free.

Gotta love that.

So, below is my revised trailer with new and completely kosher material.

Question:
I'm thinking about maybe hosting a online workshop regarding building trailers for free...do you think there's any interest out there?

I think a post on web trailers would spark a lot of interest. Let me know so I can blog it.

Hi! *waves* I'm participating in WriteOnCon, so I'm darting in-and-out, but I would really be interested in your workshop. And thanks for the tip on morguefile. I almost always use my own photos, but sometimes you need things you don't have. Happy day to you!

That trailer is great! I loved the music!! It's truly beautiful. What a gifted person you are!

I worried about the same things when I made my trailer as well, and it took an inordinate amount of time finding free music I liked, as well as photos that fit my book.

When you don't have a publishing contract, it's not as important, but when you are really using the trailer as a marketing tool, it's important to have the rights to everything in it. You did a great job!

Love your trailer, but making one for myself seems too daunting for me to try to figure out on my own.

A series of posts on how to make a book trailer would be INVALUABLE!

Great post, Tess. I ran into those problems putting together my trailer. But I had more trouble with the music. Thanks to your suggestion, I switched over to One True Media and they have a ton of free music available.

I think your trailer workshop would be great! And free is the best price of all!!

I love the new trailer, Tess - I can't wait to read this book!!!

Fabulous book trailer, Tess!!! I can't wait to read WITH A NAME LIKE LOVE. And thank you for the photo site. The site recommended to me is not as free of worry as it once was. Oh, and I'd love to learn about how to put together a book trailer. Congratulations on your great work!

I'm interested! Thanks for the links too. I wasn't aware of morguefile.com. One place many authors aren't aware of for pics to use on their blog is Flickr Creative Commons. I don't know the technical terms, but the license allows anyone to use the pictures on blogs and such as long as the photo is linked back and attributed to the photographer.

sounds like a great idea!

Tess. I would be interested in learning about this. That whole copyright thing is why I use my own pictures on my blog. I would probably try to use them in a trailer, but I know I don't have enough of the right kind of thing to represent my book. Some of them would be fun to stage though.

Beautiful video, and you arranged the music yourself? Man every time I learn something new about you I just want to be your friend more and more. You're so amazing! Thanks for letting me and my friends hang out with you on Saturday. It was delightful.

I'm definitely interested and I think others would be as well (of course that's obvious now since everyone else has said so above, but I thought I'd share my view anyway)

Hope you're doing well!

We'd all love to come to your workshop, Tess. There's big interest out there for trailers. DO IT! *hugs* girlfriend.
