Blogger Beware

*
You know those interesting Japanese comments we get on our blogs from time to time?

Well, a while back, Sarah at Slushbusters (I adore those gals) was so great to inform me that they could possibly link to horrible sites displaying inappropriate pictures of children (I don't want to say the p*rn word because I don't want my site to come up in any searches related to that word).

I took it as good advice and deleted them without looking at them (no need to bring that filth into my world).

So, yesterday, another one of those comments landed on my blog. I went to delete it and, when the cursor crossed over it, a window popped up showing the site origin.

Guess what?
Sarah was right! It was clearly a terrible, filthy site.

So -- I want to put the word out
and encourage all of you to spread the warning.

We are so often intrigued by new and different cultures and I shudder to think how many people have or might click on that comment to research the comment-or.

If you don't want to post on this topic, would you at least leave a comment on any blog thread that you see those links/comments? Let the blogger know of the issue?

And, always use the 'delete forever' option so the comment and link are taken off.

Our world is full of so much goodness, but situations like these just make me sad.

Question: Were you aware of this? Is there anyway to block these comments (you know, like you can filter out your e mail)? AND PLEASE don't use the p*rn word in any comment ... again, trying to keep this blog record clean.

I had no idea! Thank you so much for making us aware, it's good to know these types of things!

I was NOT aware of that!! I am sickened. I see those sometimes but never thought anything of it. I am so glad you said this! Thank you.

I had heard about these. :( I get a few every now and then and delete them permanently. I know on Wordpress there's askimet that works as a spam filter. I'm not sure, but I would think Blogger would have something like that.

My author blog is on Wordpress and they have a pretty good spam net (a little too good perhaps since it catches some non-spam as well). On blogger there is an option to approve all comments, which is too much of a pain, but I have it turned on for older posts.

Thank you for the warning. I did not know. I thought some people were connected to the symbol users of this world. There is much to be sad about in this world.

Ugh, yes, I've had those comments. I forget exactly how I found out they were spam, but I did. I always delete them but I don't know how to erase the comment completely, so anytime they've made an appearance there's that "this comment has been deleted" message. I haven't had any in awhile and it may be because I added the word verification thing. There's always the option of approving your comments before they post, but I feel like it's better for conversations for the comments to post immediately.

I'm so glad we could at least get something good out of the experience. It's disgusting to think of the filth that's out there. And then when you think that each picture represents a child, a little child ... it makes you want to beat the *&%! out of the folks involved in it- and I have a hard time squashing bugs!

(See? Still no bad words, Tess!)

Glad I could help.

Jenn: here is how you delete them permanently:

when you go into that little trashcan icon and delete the comment, there is a box at the bottom with a 'delete permanently' option. If that doesn't do it ... just go back into the little trashcan icon again (after the comment is deleted but the link still remains) and it will give you a 'delete permanently' option.

I had a rash of Chinese comments on a random blog post last summer. I deleted them for a week or so, feeling creepy, like they were using my blog comment area to pass around their filthy links & stuff.

Then, I took it a step further & deleted the entire post. The comments went away. Weird, huh?

Wow that's weird, I have never heard of that. Thanks for spreading the word, I will do the same! :)

Yeah, I was aware of this. I got hit with them a while ago. How do they keep finding people anyway?

Shannon said...

Unfortunately, this is how they try to drive traffic to their sites. Sorry to hear that you got hit by one.

I check every morning now to see if they are on my site. It's an awful thing. Thanks for the warning Tess!!!!

Tess - I wasn't aware of this, but since gibberish only appeared (well, Chinese characters) I didn't post the comments. I guess on some level, I was afraid it was a virus or some sort. Thanks for the warning.

That's just horrible! I've seen those comments on other blogs but never had one myself. I'm so glad you let us know so I can delete one permanately if it ever comes up.

Thanks, Tess. My blog is on wordpress and has a good spam filter, sometimes I find comments in there that aren't spam.

Oh my word! I had no idea! Thanks for letting me know. That's horrible.

My blog checks for spam comments before it publishes them. Also, if it's a new commenter, I have to aprove them before it is made public on the blog. Does yours not do that?

I've seen some friends get quite a few of these, by I've never gotten any myself. I have gotten some other spam, but I delete without opening.

Great to put the awareness out there!

Tess,
Thanks so much for this information! I had no idea! I'm shocked! I will be permanently deleting any that pop up on my blog. Thanks!!!!!

I have never heard of this! Wow and ACK!!! Thanks for the warning and the information!

Mine are way down since I went with no anonymous commenters and use word verification. Less convenient for my real commenting friends, but I was getting a ton.

Tina Laurel Lee said...

Hmm? I was not aware. Thanks for the heads up and instructions. As always it is worth my time to read your blog!

I had no idea, so thank you for bringing this to attention. Scary!

jenn said...

Thank you, Tess! I can't believe I didn't figure that out on my own (what's that cute little trash can doing there? hmmmm...) but I'm glad I know now. Thanks again!

I'm learning Japanese, can't read the comments but can instantly figure out they are junk. I'm sad to hear they lead to unpleasant sites. Spammers continue to plague us!

I just had a new type of spam comment that I haven't had before and thought I should share. At least I'm pretty sure it was spam, otherwise oops! I just deleted a sincere commenter. Essentially I think it was a spam profile--the comment and commenter seemed normal (the profile name and the name the commenter signed with were different, but I know many people who share a profile so that alone didn't seem odd) I checked their profile and they were following other blogs and had about 200 profile views--all seemed fine. Their blog and all the blogs they followed were computer related which made me wonder how they came across my blog, but I was still thinking it was a real person. But when I viewed their blog, the headlines made sense but the content was pretty much gibberish. The blog was supposedly about data entry and software and it looks like they had a list of vocabulary related to those topics along with basic words and a program randomly arranged those words into paragraphs. (So if you skimmed it it might seem to be actual content.) While I don't want to be impolite to someone who is genuinely following my blog, I also don't want to mess around with any potential spam. There were enough things that seemed fishy to me so I deleted it and reported the url to blogger for spam abuse. Hope I didn't make a mistake, but I know people create spam profiles with the hope of people clicking links that will download malware or other nefarious things to your computer. The ones I've seen before were obviously spam and I was surprised and a little alarmed at how real this one seemed. (It's why I'm still not 100% sure even.) It makes me think about bloggers who get a lot more traffic than I do and how easy it would be to overlook.

I was pretty sure that's what they were and I'd never checked them out, but it's tempting for me! Not because I'm a sicko, but because my blog's centered around all Asian literary stuff. Part of me agonizes every single time, wondering if this is someone from China or Japan, etc. who likes what I'm doing? ARGH. BTW, where is this Delete Forever button? I've looked, but can't seem to find it....
